Antique Chinese Baotou Square Wool Brown Rug - Small Scatter Size, Country of Origin: China, Circa Date: 1920s. This exquisite example of a small scatter size square rug captures the unique artistic sensibility of early 20th-century Chinese weaving, presenting a highly detailed, pictorial landscape. The design is characteristic of the baotou tradition, known for its deep, meditative scenes and use of naturalistic elements juxtaposed with strong geometric borders. The central field of this square rug depicts a stylized mountainous vista, featuring a spotted deer and a soaring crane—symbols of longevity and good fortune in traditional Chinese rugs. Woven entirely in wool, the pile retains a wonderful softness, emphasizing the subtle shifts in the color story.
