Antique American Applique Quilt: a quilt made in the United States, 24 x 38 inches (2' x 3'2"). It is pieced from fabric and quilted through to a backing, not knotted or woven like a rug. Quilts like this were made as bed coverings; today they are hung as textile art or used as a throw or bed topper. Because it is a textile, we do not recommend it for use on the floor. The design presents a whimsical domestic scene: a cottage nestled among trees, approached by a winding path, and surrounded by an exuberant garden. The highly saturated palette—pinks, reds, teal, and gold—pops dramatically against the deep, somber ground. The use of this striking black color ground emphasizes the vibrancy of the applied felt elements. Central to the composition is a figure of a girl in a bright pink dress, gathering flowers, observed by a small tan cat.
