Antique American Rag Rug Room Size Cotton Multicolor

Antique American Rag Rug Room Size Cotton Multicolor, Circa Date: 1890s. This exceptional example of American textile history captures the resourceful spirit of the late 19th century. Woven entirely from recycled cotton and fabric remnants, this piece represents a unique category of antique rugs that prioritized durability and domestic utility over formal design. The composition features a highly textural, horizontal stripe formation created by the weft-faced plain weave. The design is inherently simple, yet the variation in the woven scraps creates a mesmerizing allover design that shifts subtly depending on the light. The rug is constructed in three vertical panels, expertly joined to achieve its substantial scale. The palette is characterized by soft neutrals—oatmeal, taupe, and slate gray—punctuated by fine lines of faded rose and indigo.
